Back From San Diego!

Well, I'm back and what a trip! Had a great time hanging out with my friends and making new friends. The San Diego Comic Con is quite the deal, over 125,000 people. Beautiful weather and really great food! It was also really great to finally meet "in person" a few "blog friends" of mine . . . Ryan Wood, Todd Harris,
Mark Behm, and William Wray

On my trip to San Diego I had a layover in Denver, had to switch planes and all. While waiting to board the plane, I noticed three guys all with long blonde hair, sitting around guitars and band gear. I've been there before touring and whatnot, flying with my guitar from show to show . . . I didn't know who they were, could just tell they were in a band. I sat with them on the flight and then waited in baggage together to get our stuff. It was funny, I could tell which guy was the drummer, because he was the only one receiving the luggage off the belt. You see, drummer's are sort of like roadies . . . . "A band joke". Anyways, all three guys had very distinct features and I thought boy those guys would be fun to sketch . . . that was the last I saw of them. Two nights ago I turn on Conan O'Brien and see these guys rock'n out. It was a shock to see them there, but even more shocking was how good they were, these guys really rock! I'm a big fan of The Black Keys and they have that sort of raw feel, only juiced up a bit. The band is called Rose Hill Drive , check them out and listen for yourself, really cool music.

This morning I did some quick sketches for a warm up before getting on with the rest of my work day. This sketch is of the bass player and vocalist from Rose Hill Drive

Well, this will be my last post for a bit as I'm off to the San Diego Comic Convention. I will be at TABLE G6 & G7 with Kei Acedera and Bobby Chiu. Come by and say hi! I will be signing books and making silly faces!

One more thing . . . . my August class at Schoolism is filling up, only a few slots left. The course starts August 1st, check out for more info!

New this week for The Standard!

This was a fun one to work on, but it had its challenges. For this one, same as last week, I had nearly two days to complete from start to finish. Drawing people is no problem, I can whip that out like nothing. For this piece, I did the sketch very quick, but wasn't quite happy with my first attempts at caricaturing the animals. I love drawing animals, but realized that it would have been better if I could have had more time for developing in the sketch stage. But under this kind quick turnaround, I had to just go for it. So I did most of my fixing and adjusting while in the painting stage. My final sketch changed dramatically, and the final result is much different. The other thing that I was trying to do is not draw the characters how I've seen them drawn so many other times . . . try to bring something new to the tabel. One thing for sure, the next time I have a go at something like this I'll be better prepared, I now know a few ways how "not" to do it!

Times are a changing!

Here's a piece I did this week for The Weekly Standard. Started yesterday morning and finished this afternoon. It was a quick turnaround and I had two people to paint, so I decided to do a monochromatic painting first and then add a pinch of color to finish it off.

HULK rough idea . . .

This isn't quite to a finish yet, but I wanted to post something since it's been a few days. I will most likely do a color version of this. The purpose for this HULK is only practice, the actual HULK piece that I may be doing will be more of a scene and a little more intense to say the least. Right now I'm messing around with ideas, sketches, color and painting styles and all that good stuff. I've got some more stuff to share soon . . . working on a lot all at once.

HULK sketches!

I'm in the middle of a bunch of projects right now . . . none of the work I am currently working on can be shared for a while. So for now here are some HULK sketches. I'm currently working on some character development and designs for a "certain" project that may or may not feature MARVEL and DC characters?

Robert 9x12 OIL

This is a two hour study of a friend of mine.
9x12 oil on birch.

I'm going to do a much larger version that is less symmetric, perhaps maybe more of a 3/4s view? I think that will make for a more interesting painting. This was great practice and I now know the palette that I want to go with.
