This is one of the new paintings that I did for my new book SEILER 2008-2009. The painting is based off the likeness of my wife Kat. The purpose of this piece wasn't humor, rather I was going for something beautiful and fun. I wanted to portray a vampyre-like beauty without being too obvious. I was careful to hint only a slight fang or two. My wife isn't one who enjoys being drawn. So I was also trying to create something that she would enjoy and approve of. Happily I received her blessings. I started this piece off as a simple line drawing, and then slowly built up my values. When finished, I put slight hits of color in areas around her eyes, nose and mouth to suggest a bit of warmth.

John Dillinger Acrylic W.I.P. & new Painting Course at!

Today we started filming me paint a small acrylic of John Dillinger for a new course I'm developing for Schoolism. My new course for Schoolism, "Painting with Jason Seiler" will cover painting both digitally as well as traditionally with acrylics. Learning how to paint with acrylics, how to mix the correct values, how to build a painting and so forth. I'll share more info on this course as I get closer to announcing the first semester.

The first stages of the block in . . . starting simple, blocking in shape and looking for the correct values.

More to come as I continue to develop the painting. This is about as far as I got in a little less than an hour put into it.

Frank McCourt Portrait

This is a portrait I painted this past Thursday for The Weekly Standard. I started painting around 9:00 a.m. and painted until midnight that night . . . got up at the crack Friday morning and finished the painting around 10:00 a.m.

Frank McCourt, the Irish American author, was best known for the Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir Angela’s Ashes that chronicled his impoverished upbringing. Frank passed away last Sunday. He was 78.

I was told that because of Frank's passing, they would like me to paint a respectable portrait rather than a caricature. These are two of my more refined sketches that I shared with them, I did a couple others that didn't quite feel right to me.

Phases one and two of the painting . . . My influence artistically for this piece was my favorite illustrator, Norman Rockwell. I was also inspired by the palette of Rembrandt and Zorn Anders, or at least the look that they achieved. I was also taken by Michael J. Deas's recent painting of FDR, that he painted for TIME.

Phases four and five.

Detail of final painting. I spent a long time working on the eyes and mouth, I painted the eyes a couple times, for a while they just didn't feel right. I took a break, rested my eyes, came back and saw what was bugging me . . . fixed it and whalla! For me, once the eyes are right, I can be loose and much more expressive, and have more fun!

Jimmy Fallon sketch!

Just for fun, a quick warm up for practice, sketching with photoshop. I started first by blocking in with a fleshy color then painted in black and white values on top . . . no rhyme nor reason, just because I enjoy painting.

Here's a pic I took while working on it.

I attended this convention last year, was honored to have won a few awards, but more than anything, it is a great way to learn and have fun with fellow artists!
For those of you who may not have heard, the National Caricaturist Network has a new name. It is now the ISCA, which stands for the International Society of Caricature Artists. So now the NCN Annual Caricature Convention will be known as the ISCA Annual Caricature Convention.

Speaking of the convention, I wanted to tell everyone here about the big news. This year's annual convention is taking place at the Kalahari Resort in Sandusky, Ohio from November 2nd through the 7th. And the best part is this year's theme: MAD Magazine! We have four top artists from MAD as our guests of honor: Sam Viviano, Mark Fredrickson, Hermann Meija and Tom Richmond. And also for the first time, they are allowing NON-members to come and attend the guest speaker seminars for a special price. All the info can be found here.

I also would like to share a Book my Dad has for sale, you can check out more on my Dad by clicking here. This book is a MUST for anyone serious about painting!
