The New Yorker

I'm excited to share my first piece for The New Yorker! TIME, Rolling Stone, and The New Yorker, were my top three that I dreamed of working for, or with, so I am stoked to say the least! I love sketching and drawing and for years I have wanted to do this type of work for publication. I always thought the style would be perfect for The New Yorker, so it's exciting for me that it came together the way that it did! I hope this will be the first of many for The New Yorker.

Steven Charny for Rolling Stone!

This is the great "Steven Charny" head art director for Rolling Stone. Sadly, he's leaving Rolling Stone and off to new adventures elsewhere. I say sadly because he was such a great art director to work for. Rolling Stone was my dream job ever since I was 15 and thanks to Steven I've done 5 paintings for RS not including this one of Steven. While working on my last painting for RS, was was asked secretly if I would paint Steven as a gift for his going away party! I of course was seriously honored and got right on it. I was asked to paint him in the same way I would paint an artist for Rolling Stone's Music Reviews section. Another fun piece to work on.
Here's Steven posed with his three gifts. My painting, a mock parody cover with Janet Jackson and then an awesome parody cover by the Great Victor Juhasz!
References I took of myself to help with pose and lighting . . .

Cyrano de Bergerac for Broadway!

A couple weeks ago I painted this poster for the Roundabout Theatre Company! As usual it was a very quick turn around, especially since they wanted something "Rembrandt-like", and lets face it, I'm no Rembrandt. :)
My original art . . .
The reference of the model or actor that I had to paint was limited and not very large so that added a bit to the challenge. I wanted to make sure that I had some good reference to help this piece a long so I went to a local costume shop here in Chicago and created my own reference and lighting . . . it was a lot of fun!

Rick Ross for Rolling Stone!

This is my 5th painting for Rolling Stone!!! I've said it before and I'll say it again, Rolling Stone is my favorite magazine to paint for. This was a one day job, started Thursday morning at 7:00 a.m. and finished by 6:00 p.m. that same day . . . it was crazy but it was also a blast!! I decided to save some of my steps while I painted. I hope you enjoy!
