Study of Piers Morgan

Paint study that I did today of Piers Morgan.

I'm wanting to be more painterly in my work, so I was happy with the brush strokes that I ended up with on this caricature.

This is my thumbnail sketch, done in one minute.

Loose sketch, quickly defining my thumbnail sketch. This took about five minutes.

First step in block in . . .

Second step in block in . . .

Third step in block in . . .

Fourth step in block in . . .

Oh my! Brushwork is the right word here! Looks great.
I can almost smell turpentine and oil!
BTW it should be an option under some keyboard short-cut: include scent of oil paints...

Good, but damnit if your stuff isn't just too photo-realistic.

I appreciate you have visible brushstrokes and pushed proportions, but nothing else seems to be painterly or pushed (ie colour & lighting)

It looks like, for better or worse, you've copied exactly your photo reference.

Thank you for this Jason, I love it when artists show their W.I.P. its invaluable reference material. You've caught Piers perfectly, right down to that slightly smug look he always has on his face.
